Financial Literacy Program

Note: Due to COVID-19, classes have been temporarily postponed. Please check back for class availability.

Financial Literacy edit

Financial Lit 2 editThe Financial Literacy Program consists of two modules taken from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Money Smart Financial Education Program. Each class module is 90 minutes and classes will be available in Spanish. The classes will be taught by representatives from eleven different financial institutions in the county, the Literacy Council, and AMEZ Housing in Wilmington.

The purpose of the program is to help participants learn how to manage and make smart choices with their money, to set financial goals, and to establish a pathway for financial understanding. Participants will learn how to track their income and expenses, set spending priorities, and develop a household budget.
These classes will be offered to all BFA clients. Classes in Shallotte will be held at Shallotte Presbyterian Church, and in Sunset Beach at Seaside United Methodist Church.  Classes will also be held in Southport at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and in Leland at Closer Walk Church on a rolling two month schedule for clients living in those areas. Clients who complete both modules will receive a $35 energy credit towards their bill.

Financial Lit 3 editThe development of the Financial Literacy Program was the result of the teamwork, collaboration, and partnership among many parties. BFA would like to extend thanks to the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Team, the Brunswick County Literacy Council, and Kiwanis Club for developing the course content and acquiring the services of many of the financial institutions to teach the classes.

The Financial Literacy Program goes to the core of BFA’s mission of helping those in financial crisis who are willing to help themselves by providing emergency assistance. By learning financial and money management tips and strategies, we are hopeful our clients will be able to strengthen their family financial situation. We believe this program will be a win-win for all involved: BFA clients, our community, and financial institutions.

Please call BFA at (910) 754-4766 to see when classes will be available in your area.
